Da sich Suspiria imo nicht durch seine Handlung, sondern durch den Stil, die Kamera, die Atmo, die Farben etc. definiert, halte ich das übelst für zum Scheitern verurteilt.

Suspiria: Legendary Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke to compose first film score ever with horror remake

In what is an undeniable dose of great news, Frenesy Films and Mythology Entertainment announced today that singer/songwriter Thom Yorke, he of beloved British progressive pop band Radiohead, will compose the score for Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria. This marks the immensely-talented musician’s first time scoring a feature film. Amazon Studios co-financed the film with K Period Media and Amazon Studios will release the film theatrically in the United States.

Says Luca Guadgnino, “Thom’s art transcends the contemporary. To have the privilege of his music and sound for Suspiria is a dream come true. The depth of his creation and artistic vision is so unique that our ‘Suspiria’ will sound groundbreaking and will deeply resonate with viewers. Our goal is to make a movie that will be a disturbing and transforming experience: for this ambition, we could not find a better partner than Thom.”

Producers Marco Morabito and Brad Fischer added, “Thom Yorke has composed and performed some of the most iconic and transformative music in modern culture. To have him lend his talent to ‘Suspiria’ is an extraordinary gift, both to us as filmmakers and to audiences, who have a remarkable, terrifying and emotionally stirring experience in store for them.”

Suspiria Music Supervisor Robin Urdang played a key role in negotiating the deal to secure Yorke’s involvement.

Thomas Edward “Thom” Yorke is an English musician cited among the most influential figures in the music industry. He has been named as one of the most powerful British musicians and has also been included among the greatest singers in the history of popular music. A multi-instrumentalist, Yorke mainly plays guitar and piano, but also plays keyboards, bass, and drums, and works extensively with synthesizers, sequencers and programming and is known for his falsetto vocals. It’s a really avant garde choice to have Yorke score the film. For those in the know, one of the most important elements of Argento’s original film is the score (by Italian prog-rock band Goblin).

The re-imagining of Dario Argento’s cult classic film stars Tilda Swinton (who looks like Yorke!), Dakota Johnson, Mia Goth, Chloë Grace Moretz, Lutz Ebersdorf, and star of the original Suspiria, Jessica Harper.

Synopsis: Susie Bannion, a young American woman, travels to the prestigious Markos Tanz Company in Berlin in the year 1977. She arrives just as one of the Company’s members, Patricia, has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. As Susie makes extraordinary progress under the guidance of Madame Blanc, the Company’s revolutionary artistic director, she befriends another dancer, Sara, who shares her suspicions that the Matrons, and the Company itself, may be harboring a dark and menacing secret.

Director Says New Suspiria Film Isn’t a Remake

We don’t know about you, but we here at Dread Central are not inherently against remakes. Some of the most classic horror films have been remakes themselves, such as The Blob, The Thing, and The Fly to name a few.

It is with this in mind we are looking forward to director Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming remake of Dario Argento’s utter classic Suspiria. Even if only for morbid curiosity.

And speaking of the remake, the film’s director would kindly like everyone to stop referring to it as such.

“It’s inspired by the same story, but it goes in different directions, it explores other reasons,” Guadagino told Allocine. “Its semantics, of course, but I think people really have to understand that this is not a remake, because the word ‘remake’ gives the impression that we want to erase the original, and the opposite is what we tried to do.”

On top of that, the director recently spoke with Criterion and gave a general update on when we can expect to see the upcoming rema– sorry, upcoming film.

“I have three months until I finish it. It’s a very special film, and I’m proud of it,” he told Criterion. “I wonder all the time how people will react to it, being that it is based on a masterpiece. I often find myself in the position of saying ‘Oh, it’s ridiculous!’ when I hear stories that they want to remake a movie like 8½, so I don’t know if I’m going to be served the same dish. But I can say that my Suspiria is a very personal film; it’s like oxygen to me. When I saw the original movie thirty-two years ago, the emotion I felt was so strong, so mind-blowing, and so important to my upbringing. I wanted to investigate the experience I had watching that film.”

Ich glaube, man darf hier keinen Vergleich ziehen - denn er kann das Original gar nicht erreichen. Deshalb ist es vielleicht gar nicht mal verkehrt, es überhaupt nicht zu versuchen. Ich bin skeptisch klar, kann mir aber auch nicht vorstellen, dass es dermaßen Brutalitäten geben wird... Bodyhorror klingt eher nach Cronenberg, aber lassen wir uns überraschen.

In diesem Fall kann das imo nur was werden, wenn sie einen gänzlich anderen Weg gehen.

Okay, das sieht extrem oldschoolig aus.
Sowas hab ich jetzt mal gar nicht erwartet. Natürlich muss er sich in diesem Fall immer mit dem Original vergleichen lassen. Es drängt sich zudem der Gedanke auf, ob man einen Film braucht, der aussieht als ob er aus den 70ern ist, da muss man zwangsläufig an das 1:1 Remake von Psycho denken.
ABER, schlagt micht, ich find den Trailer nicht schlecht.

Bin auch überrascht. Aber Suspiria war mein Argento-Einstieg und über alles gesehen, mein Liebster von ihm.

Ich werde versuchen, nicht immer zu vergleichen.

Ich glaube auch, dass man den nicht mit dem Original vergleichen sollte. Die werden die Geschichte wohl ganz anders erzählen. Einen coolen Euro-Touch wünsche ich mir trotzdem, und dem Trailer nach (wo man wirklich nichts sieht) scheint der Film eine ganz andere Atmosphäre zu haben als US-Filme. Bin nun echt neugierig... ich hoffe auf eine gelungene Neuinterpretation, kann mich aber nicht ganz davon freimachen, dass manche Einstellungen irgendwie etwas an "Mother of Tears" erinnern - also mehr düster, dreckig und erdige Farben... es bleibt abzuwarten.

Das Ding soll 150 Minuten laufen. Das ist wieder sowas, was ich beim besten Willen nicht verstehen kann. Ich lasse mich gerne eines besseren belehren, aber warum muss der Film eine Stunde länger sein als das Original? Im Kino könnte das tatsächlich anstrengend werden. Tarantino hat übrigens geheult und den Regisseur umarmt nachdem er den Film gesehen hat, sagt man.

150 Minuten... Die Filmbranche macht sich doch mit solchen Laufzeiten selbst kaputt.

Wenns unterhält, darf ein Film gerne 3 Stunden gehen! es gibt epische Meisterwerke, da sagt nie jemand was gegen Überlänge, dann gibt es halt Filme, denen eine Straffung gut getan hätte. Aber ihr haut den Film schon wieder in die Pfanne obwohl ihr erst den Trailer und die Laufzeit kennt. Wartet doch erst Mal ab.

Als aktuelles Beispiel füge ich Es ein. Wenn man das Buch auch nur ansatzweise hätte 1:1 verfilmen wollen, wären es wahrscheinlich fünf dreistündige Filme geworden und ich hätte wohl noch immer zu wenig Material! bzgl. Suspiria habe ich genau so wenig Ahnung wie ihr, woraus die zusätzlichen Minuten bestehen. Ich habe nur gelesen, dass die FSK wohl nicht nur Freude am Film haben könnte...

Du hast ja Recht, aber das ist einfach ein bisschen Beschäftigungstherapie, der Film bekommt auf jeden Fall eine Chance. Grundsätzlich bin ich ja interessiert.

Standart waren früher 90min für einen normalen Film. Alles darüber waren große Geschichten oder epische Meisterwerke. Heute ist jede Comicverfilmung, jeder Kinofilm mindestens 120min lang und das in einer Zeit, in der der Mensch immer weniger Zeit hat und immer schneller Abwechslung benötigt, dementsprechend immer mehr Leute eher Serien bevorzugen als Filme (mein halber Freundeskreis kuckt fast nur noch Serien). Da halte ich eine solche Länge für contraproduktiv, gerade bei solch einem Film. Ich nehme mir nicht einfach mal so 2 1/2 Stunden Zeit um sie für einen einzigen Film zu verbrauchen. Das ist in meinen Augen eine ganz gefährliche Entwicklung, auch wenn das hier wohl kaum Einer so eng sieht.
