Ich muss zugeben, dass ich vor dem Kinobesuch nur wusste, dass es sich um einen Pixar Streifen handelt, in dem es um einen Jungen in Mexiko geht, der Musiker werden will und eine Reise in das Totenreich macht. Den Trailer habe ich, glaube ich, auch nicht konzentriert geschaut.
Was ich dann gestern im Kino erlebt habe, war einer der besten Animationsfilme überhaupt. Hier stimmt so ziemlich alles. Die Geschichte ist relativ simpel und man kann sich schon früh denken, wo genau die Reise hingeht. Dennoch hält sie genug kleine Überraschungen, sowie jede Menge tolle, phantasievolle Einfälle parat und wird einfach richtig gut erzählt.
Mehr als das oben angerissene muss man eigentlich gar nicht vorher wissen, vielleicht nur noch, dass die Tradition des Diaz de la muertos, des Tags der Toten, eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Der Film hat in meinen Augen kaum Schwächen. Besonders stark finde ich die geniale visuelle Umsetzung. Die Figuren sind enorm detailliert und liebevoll ausgearbeitet, aber auch die Schauplätze sehen phänomenal gut aus. Inhaltlich bieten die Figuren eine gewisse Tiefe, die bei Trickfilmen nicht selbstverständlich sind. Schnell taucht man ab in die faszinierende Welt, die einem hier geboten wird. Wie für gute Animations üblich funktioniert auch der Spagat zwischen Humor und Tragik hervorragend, zum Ende hin hatte ich sogar Tränen in den Augen, so bewegend ist die Entwicklung der Story. Ganz großes Kino. Im Vorfeld habe ich öfter was von Musical gelesen. Das ist halb wahr, Musik spielt eine sehr wichtige Rolle und im Film sind so ca. 4-6 längere Nummern eingepflochten, was aber überhaupt nicht stört. Im Gegenteil, mir persönlich gefällt die gebotene Mariachi-Mucke überwiegend sehr gut. Einzig bei den deutschen Gesangsstimmen muss man insbesondere bei der Hauptfigur kleine Abstriche machen. Aber ich bin heilfroh, dass hier richtige Synchronsprecher und Schauspieler eingesetzt wurden und den Namen nach keine nervigen C-Promis, wie bei vielen Disney Filmen.

Auf Grund der Thematik, die bei Kindern sicherlich etwas Erklärungsbedarf benötigt, würde ich ihn ab 5 bis 6 Jahren empfehlen. Er hat schon ein paar Dinge drin, die nicht jedes Kind versteht, den Tod z.b. als zentrales Thema.

Unterm Strich bleibt nur zu sagen, dass 'Coco - Lebendiger als das Leben' für mich der unterhaltsamste und beste Animationsfilm seit 'Coraline' ist. Er ist dabei aber nicht ganz so düster. Ich bin wirklich ziemlich begeistert und kann schon mal sagen, dass er ein ganz heißer Kandidat für den ersten Platz in meinen Jahrescharts ist. :8.5: - :9:

Die Kinoempehlung kommt natürlich uneingeschränkt, im Idealfall schaut ihr ihn in 2D. Ich vermute, dass man da noch mehr von den herrlichen Details mitbekommt. Wir dind auch extra dafür in den Nachbarort gefahren. Ganz großes Kino!!!

Habe schon davon gelesen, dass es ganz großes Kino sein soll, Disney's Bester seit Langen und hat in Mexico wohl schon einige Preise eingeheimst.

Das wurde in den Staaten nicht wirklich mit Begeisterung aufgenommen, eine dreiviertel Stunde durchzusitzen, bis der eigentliche Film endlich anfängt...

A new report reveals that Olaf's Frozen Adventure will no longer play in front of Coco, starting next week.

A Reddit user claiming to work for a movie theater shared a note that the theater received from Disney asking that the theater stops Olaf's Frozen Adventure from playing starting Friday, December 8th. The letter that Disney reportedly sent asked the theater to stop and that in lieu of the extra time that the theater will receive, that they add an extra showing of Coco to the schedule. It isn't clear if the Frozen short was intended to be a limited release or if Disney is bowing to the mostly negative reaction that the short has received. The note reads.

"Please note that the run of Olaf's Frozen Adventure playing before COCO will end after 12/7. Starting on Friday 12/8 no more Olaf shorts should be up on screen. With the extra 22 minutes of running time back, we would appreciate if you could get in an extra show if possible.
Thanks!"

The Frozen short has been problematic for many reasons, but the length is the biggest offender for most. One father commented that he brought his kids to see Coco and revealed that he and his kids weren't sure if they were in the right movie. Other movie theater workers observed people getting aggressive during the "short" and letting out groans of "finally" when the short ended. The additional wait time is definitely not optimal for parents bringing in young children to sit through nearly two-and-a-half hours of material, including the Coco runtime. That's a lot of additional material to sit through for kids expecting to see a story about music and family set to the backdrop of Mexico's Dia de los Muertos.

Coco co-director and writer Adrian Molina called the addition of the short as a "bit of an experiment," which has failed miserably. It seems like the two stories would work together since Coco is about family traditions while Olaf's Frozen Adventure has the snowman searching for traditions, but the story was originally supposed to be a TV special and not a short in front of a feature length movie. When asked about the "short's" run time, Molina said, "It is longer than, I think, any other short that has ever been attached to one of these films, so I've heard that that has taken people by surprise."

For those of you on the fence about bringing young children to go see Coco, it seems that next weekend will be the time to do so when Olaf's Frozen Adventure is removed. It isn't clear if Disney or Pixar will be replacing the short with an actual short movie before Coco, but it would seem logical that they will. Fand ich auch etwas ungewöhnlich. Coco hat dann aber für alles entschädigt.
