RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD DOC MORE BRAINS IS COMING TO DVD OCTOBER 18THby J Hurtado, September 14, 2011 8:12 PMThe Return of the Living Dead is among my favorite films. I can't even begin to count how many times I've seen it, and the idea that there was a documentary in production about the film and I didn't know it, shocks me. Regardless of my ignorance, I cannot be more excited for this release!The Return of the Living Dead has a somewhat complicated home video history. It was late to DVD with its initial edition not showing up until 2003, and the VHS edition long out of print by that point. That special edition had some curious editorial changes, including altered dialogue and musical selections. The only English friendly home video edition with the original soundtrack is the long out of print Tartan UK edition, but that DVD is full screen and not the best quality. In the time since 2003, the film has been reissued on Blu-ray but with the altered audio, so there isn't a currently in print copy of the original film. Not a tragedy of Star Wars-esque proportions, but irritating to fans nonetheless. Dan O'Bannon, the director of the first and by far best of the RotLD series died a few years ago. More Brains features his final taped interview as well as lots of contributions from the original cast and crew. This thing really sounds worthwhile, and I can't wait to get my undead hands on it! Die neuen gefallen mir zwar nicht mehr, aber 16er macht den Film irgendwie so "harmlos". Ist Käse ich weiß, das sind einfach Emotionen der Vergangenheit die ich damit assoziere ;-)

In den USA gibt es den ersten Teil auf Bluray, die Qualität liegt aber nur marginal über der DVD. Ob ein Upgrade lohnt und man dafür auf den deutschen Ton verzichtet darf jeder selbst entscheiden. Das Cover ist zudem zum kotzen hässlich!

Iit is worth noting that this [US Blu-ray], and all of the US releases of this film on DVD have a slightly altered soundtrack. The Tar-man's voice is rerecorded, as is the "send more cops" zombie, and a couple of songs are mixed down or cut, including The Tall Boys "Take a Walk", and The Damned's "Dead Beat Dance". There is also sound editing around another event that might constitute a spoiler, so I won't post it specifically. That is all fairly disappointing, but I can't see it being corrected any time soon. I think Dan O'Bannon was pretty upset about it, but he was out of the decision making loop for this one, and now he is gone. It doesn't completely ruin the experience, but it is worth noting. The very first DVD release from Tartan UK had the in tact original soundtrack, but it was full screen, it is now long out of print and expensive on the second hand market. You can't always get what you want.Second Sight have listened to the fans and will be releasing ROTLD with the proper soundtrack for the first time in a long time.
