Nun ist eine Verfilmung seiner dunklen Saga "The Dark Tower" geplant - was aber noch im Raume schwebt ist, ob es eine TV oder Kinoadaption sein wird. Zuständiger Regisseur wird J.J. Abrams (Lost) sein, welcher das Mammutprojekt bestehend aus Horror, Western und Science-Fiction Elementen realisieren soll. The project is not yet set up at either company. On first glance, King's tale -- which sprawls across seven books as it blends the fantasy, sci-fi, horror and Western genres -- might seem better suited for a multiple-episode television treatment. On the other hand, its potential cost might call for a large-scale cinematic treatment. Sources say a number of entities have been chasing "Tower" but that King is looking for strong filmmaker involvement, which is where Abrams enters the picture. It is unclear whether Abrams, who is repped by WMA, would take on the project solely as a producer or whether he would direct as well. But King hasn't been shy about admitting that he's a huge fan of Abrams' television series "Lost." In fact, he recently participated in a round-table for Entertainment Weekly with Abrams and "Lost" exec producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. During the course of the discussion, "Tower" was mentioned several times. Lindelof even brought along a rare first edition of "The Gunslinger," Book 1 of the "Tower" series, for King to sign. It all sounded like the sort of mutual admiration society that could lead to a genuine collaboration.

Der fleissige Regisseur, der bei diesem Projekt gemeinsam mit Damon Lindelof (Star Trek) als Produzent fungiert, ließ wissen, dass er und Lindelof mit Stephen King gesprochen haben und dass man die Filmrechte für The Dark Tower inne hat. Derzeit sei Damon Lindelof allerdings noch voll und ganz mit Lost beschäftigt. Da die erfolgreiche TV-Serie mit der sechsten Staffel im Mai 2010 zu Ende geht, hofft J.J. Abrams nach den großen Finale von Lost mit den Arbeiten an der Kinoadaption von Der dunkle Turm beginnen zu können. Damon Lindelof ließ bereits vor einiger Zeit durchblicken, dass in den richtigen Händen jeder einzelne Band der Dark Tower-Reihe einen eigenen Film bekommen würde.

"Der dunkle Turm ist ein heikles Thema, weil es ein derart wichtiges Stück Literatur ist. Die Wahrheit ist einfach, dass Damon und ich von der Verfilmung Abstand genommen haben," erklärt Abrams gegenüber MTV. Ein weiterer Grund für die Ablehnung dürften zeitliche Probleme sein, da der Regisseur, Autor und Produzent zeitgleich an diversen Projekten arbeitet, unter anderem einem Star Trek Sequel und Mission: Impossible IV. Es bleibt also weiterhin unklar, ob Anhänger der Reihe jemals eine Umsetzung auf der Kinoleinwand erblicken werden.

Wie der Hollywood Reporter berichtet, sind Akiva Goldsman und Ron Howard in die erneute Wiederbelebung der Thematik involviert. So soll Goldsman, als Produzenten unter anderem schon bei I Am Legend, Jonah Hex und Constantine tätig, für die Drehbuchvorlage verantwortlich zeichnen, während Ron Howard (The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind) die inszenatorische Leitung der Adaption übernimmt. Das Projekt dürfte sich zum aktuellen Zeitpunkt in einer sehr frühen Planungsphase befinden, soll jedoch unter dem produzierenden Blick von Imagine Entertainment und Weed Road entstehen. Erst kürzlich mussten J.J. Abrams (Cloverfield, Star Trek) und Produktionshaus Bad Robot die Verfilmungsrechte an dem Stoff an King zurückgeben. Planungen sehen vor, die berühmte Vorlage als Spielfilm auf die Leinwand zu adaptieren, der anschließend zu einer von Imagine prodzierten TV-Serie führen soll. Gerüchten zufolge wird Universal Pictures als Vertrieb auftreten.

"Es ist total faszinierend, die Geschichte zu erkunden. Ich schreibe sogar noch um 3 Uhr früh Szenen um, was ein gutes Zeichen ist", setzte der Filmemacher fort. Der dunkle Turm basiert auf einer Reihe von Stephen King, der bereits die Vorlagen zu Filmen wie Es, Zimmer 1408 und The Mist beisteuerte. Mit Der dunkle Turm strebt Ron Howard eine Trilogie an, wie er gegenüber Deadline außerdem bestätigte. Der erste Film soll 2013 in den Kinos starten.
