NEW YORK -- Oscar-nominated actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at a downtown Manhattan residence, police said Tuesday, in what might be a drug-related death.

Ledger was found by his housekeeper, who was trying to let him know that a masseuse had arrived for an appointment, police said. The housekeeper found him dead at 3:26 p.m. with a bottle of pills next to the body, according to police.

Ledger was found in the SoHo apartment that is believed to be his home. A large crowd of paparazzi and onlookers began gathering outside the building, where several police officers guarded the door.

The Australian-born actor starred in "Brokeback Mountain" and "The Brothers Grimm." He was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "Brokeback."

He met his wife, actress Michelle Williams, in 2005 when working on "Brokeback." Ledger and Williams had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

Ledger's roles include the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball." He also had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot." He was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins" that recently finished filming.

Ledger was born in 1979, grew up in Perth and began doing amateur theater at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

After several independent films, Ledger moved to Los Angeles and co-starred in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew." His movie career caught on soon after that, culminating with his Academy Award nomination for "Brokeback Mountain."

Es ist doch überhaupt noch nicht bestätigt, ob es Selbstmord war. Er hatte starke Schlaftabletten genommen, weil er seit einiger Zeit an Schlaflosigkeit litt. Möglich ist, dass er die Dosis unterschätzt hat und ein paar zuviel einnahm, das wird die Autopsie zeigen. Die Trennung mag zwar ein herber Rückstoß gewesen sein, aber sonst ging es ihm tadellos, er war auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Karriere und nach dem neuen Batman-Film (der abgedreht ist, immerhin) würde es noch weiter steil nach oben gehen für ihn. Nach einem Selbstmord sieht es (noch) nicht aus und ich finde es traurig, dass Leute das schon als Fakt dahinstellen und mit der "Selbst Schuld"-Keule ankommen...
