Ridley Scott is shooting for a “pretty hard R” rating on his upcoming franchise sequel Alien: CovenantWork is already underway on Ridley Scott’s upcoming return to the world of Alien. Following a Golden Globe (Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical) win for his The Martian, Scott is off to Australia to begin production on the upcoming Alien: Covenant. Speaking backstage, Scott revealed a few details about his plans for the picture, including the fact that he’s shooting for “a pretty hard R” rating. He even teases that he’s got something “much worse” than the iconic chestbuster scene in store.“I always remember walking down the edge in Saint Louis when we were previewing [Alien],” Scott recalls. “I couldn’t sit through the film one more time. I walked down the edge into the kitchen scene when John Hurt started to bring up his breakfast. That moment, I realized how pretty scary the film was… I felt a sense of responsibility that I had gone too far because it was extreme. I’m going to try and do that again this year, but much worse.”Of course, an R rating isn’t entirely a surprise given the franchise’s history. Of the seven Alien films, only one has not received an R. Released in 2004, Paul W.S. Anderson’s Alien vs. Predator was released with a PG-13.Set as the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus, Alien: Covenant connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Noomi Rapace, who played “Dr. Elizabeth Shaw” in Prometheus, is officially not returning to reprise her role in Alien: Covenant, according to director Ridley Scott. This comes just a few months after Scott stated that Rapace would be coming back, although for a minor role. I guess they wrote that part out?Rapace was the only human survivor from the 2012 sci-fi/thriller, alongside Michael Fassbender’s “David”, who is confirmed to return. Per Xposé, the direct also stated, “We’re still casting the main roles.”The sequel to the 2012 film, Alien: Covenant will take place 10 years after the events of the first film. Tons of news has been coming out for it over the past several weeks, including that the movie will bring back the xenomorph eggs, face-huggers, and chest bursting that we’ve come to know and love over the years.

This ‘Alien’ is going to be… I’m very excited to see it and everybody in the film was saying this is a film that we all want to see. It’s much scarier than ‘Prometheus’ but it’s got the same sort of scope of ‘Prometheus’. It’s kind of got more of the sort of thriller, imminent disaster feel that ‘Alien’ had, so it’s kind of a beautiful meeting of both of those films. I’m really excited to see it, I think it’s gonna be super scary number one and then again with the massive scope of ‘Prometheus’… Once it starts and the ball starts rolling, it doesn’t let up. It’s really gonna bring chills to the cinema.
