The 1995 movie did pretty wel at the box office, but the sequel - Mortal Kombat: Annihilation - pretty much killed the franchise, and it's remained in development hell ever since. However, the success of web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy changed that. As a result, New Line is moving forward with a big screen reboot, and Variety reports that Simon McQuoid is in talks to take the helm. The Australian director is best known for his commercials work, and he's contributed to high profile campaigns related to both PlayStation and the Halo franchise. Mortal Kombat is a big step up for him then, but at least he's no stranger to the world of video games.Aquaman director James Wan is producing the movie, while Greg Russo penned the most recent draft of the screenplay. The latest instalment of the video game franchise - Mortal Kombat X - was the best-selling one to date, so it's easy to see why the studio is confident that they have a potential hit on their hands here.

Nun gaben die Filmemacher bekannt, dass der Humor trotz Brutalität und hohem Blutzoll nicht kurz kommen wird: „Existiert überhaupt eine rein düstere Version vom Videospiel? Wenn ja, dann handelt es sich nicht um das Mortal Kombat, das ich kenne. Nehmt Kano als Beispiel. Er ist ein fantastischer Charakter, der gerne Witze reißt. Bis zu einem gewissen Grad muss eine Prise Humor einfach vorhanden sein. Auch wenn es gewalttätig zur Sache geht, gekämpft wird und für die Figuren einiges auf dem Spiel steht, muss die Hanldung am Ende trotzdem Spaß machen und mit Humor aufgelockert werden.“„Ich hasse diesen Vergleich zwar, aber Filme von Marvel sind auch spaßig. Unser Werk wird allerdings eine Spur erwachsener“, erklärt Russo abschließend im Bezug auf sein Mortal Kombat. Und lange scheint die seit Jahren in Planung befindliche Verfilmung jetzt nicht mehr auf sich warten zu lassen.
