"Sorry for taking so long in answering your e-mail, but you asked us some deep questions that deserve good, well considered answers. It is a concern for any couple if they seem to be on a different page from one another on some of the most basic issues in life. It does not bode well for their future relationship. So you were right in raising these issues.
Now for some answers: Firstly, no, we do not belong to a sect. We consider ourselves ordinary believers who take the Bible at face value. Historically that is the way Luther, Calvin and the great Reformers understood the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. We just follow in their tradition.
In the Bible we learn that there is a God, who created heaven and earth and to whom everyone is responsible for how they live and conduct themselves. We can see you struggle with this concept as we have done at times. Trusting in a God whom you can't see or touch through your ordinary senses seems somewhat strange, to say the least. Yet we can also say that when we turned to Him in faith He proved to be really there!
You say that the Bible is not a historically correct book which is a popular misconception. In an early edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, for example, the entry for "Hittites" read "a mythical people only mentioned in the Bible", showing that popular bias. If you read a present day edition you will find page upon page on the Hittites. There are many confirmations to validate place-names, historical characters, and events that show the reliability of the Bible in terms of its historicity.
Concerning the theory of evolution, it is a theory as you correctly stated, not a proven fact. In the nature of the case, no-one can scientifically prove or disprove either creation or evolution. To do so would require us to have been there when it all happened and be able to repeat the experiment, so to speak. Either theory demands a faith position and your girlfriend has chosen one which seems different from your own position. Personally we don't fancy being descendants from monkeys, but that is a minor issue.
In regard to following the rules and principles of Christianity, whether one believes in God or not is a matter of considering the teaching of the Old and New Testaments themselves. The Bible teaches us that there is only one way to a right relationship with God and that is through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God. We agree that many people claim to live a "Christian" life who are obviously not doing so, whereas others live morally exemplary lives who do not claim to be followers. What counts, however, in the teaching of the Bible is the recognition that no-one can perfectly follow the law of God. We all fall short of the standard required. God requires 100% obedience and it is only in Jesus Christ that we see this standard fulfilled. Without His sacrifice and assistance through the Holy Spirit we are all unable to please God. That is what we learn from the Bible and who are we to argue with God?
We are concerned, as you are, about the differences between you and your girlfriend's point-of-views. You are obviously hurt and disappointed in your expectations and it is one of the things that needs serious consideration. In our mind you are both entitled to your own views and opinions as human beings and to receive respect for those beliefs and views. Any marriage relationship demands give and take attitudes on many issues. You may differ on which party you vote for in an election. You may like certain foods, and dislike others. In reality your preferences will differ in lots of cases. The question is whether you can both accept the fundamental differences in your basic orientation to life. It is a question only you can answer. "
