Auf dem Toronto International Film Festival lief der neue Tsukamoto. Zum Film:
Postpartum depression is a serious mental illness that affects an estimated 13 per cent of mothers. Symptoms include problems sleeping and thoughts of suicide, and it can have a negative impact on a child’s development. It’s unclear when Kotoko’s illness began, but it appears to have become significantly worse since the birth of her son.
Kotoko (Cocco) is a single mother. She has terrifying hallucinations of strangers attacking her and her baby every time she ventures outside the apartment. As a result, they’ve had to move a lot. She’s also a cutter, describing it as a test of her body’s will to live. Eventually she meets a man (Shin’ya Tsukamoto) convinced he can save her from herself, but their relationship is a twisted match of sadism and masochism that can’t end well.
The ending of the picture is incredibly fitting for a psychological mystery. Throughout the story, it’s difficult to always decipher what is reality and what is fantasy. Some things seem too absurd to represent an actual event, while others are entirely believable. But they are all so interwoven into her experience that they are not always differentiated by a noticeable change in style. Even Kotoko’s voiceover narrative is not always capable of distinguishing between fact and fiction. Though unsettling, these elements combine for an edge-of-your-seat, mouth gaping, enthralling film experience.
Cocco is a folk rock singer that unleashes a side of herself fans were likely completely unaware even existed. The character often sings to calm her nerves, but this role required so much more than a pretty voice. She convincingly portrays a frantic, desperate, loving woman who is often confused but trying her best to do what’s needed. Writer/director/actor Tsukamoto, on the other hand, is well versed in the psychological drama. The filmmaker has taken on similar triple duty on the Tetsuo and Nightmare Detective films.
Finally, Tsukamoto creates a frenetic atmosphere in which Kotoko lives, breathes and panics. The soundtrack is unnerving, the camera is constantly moving and the shots are too close; particularly in contrast to her moments of peace that are full framed, wide angled and infrequent. It is these stylistic choices that truly inform the tone of the film.
Kotoko screened as a part of the Visions programme at TIFF.

Klingt nicht uninteressant, zumal es bisher keinen Tsukamoto gab, der mich wirklich enttäuscht hätte (bis auf Hiruko vielleicht, aber das war eie Auftragsarbeit).
Wann der Film wo raus kommt, das ist noch nicht bekannt.

Und welchen Label-Namen nenne ich hier immer am liebsten? Ja, third window films. Dieses Label ist einfach immer wieder für Überraschungen gut, hat eine interessante Titelauswahl am Start, hält ihr Line-Up immer schon einheitlich und ansprechend, und... plant für den August 2012 eine Kinoauswertung des Films. Im Oktober soll die Heimkino-Auswertung folgen.

Man kann halt nicht alles haben im Leben ;)
Wobei ich, wo wir wieder beim alten Synchro-Thema wären, die dt. Vertonung asiatischer Filme meistens grauenhaft finde. Wobei es natürlich auch ausnahmen gibt.
Aber vielleicht nimmt sich rem oder Koch Media des Filmes an. Tsukamoto Filme liegen ja soweit alle auch auf Deutsch vor.

Wobei ich, wo wir wieder beim alten Synchro-Thema wären, die dt. Vertonung asiatischer Filme meistens grauenhaft finde. Wobei es natürlich auch ausnahmen gibt.
Vollste Zustimmung. Nur sehr wenige Synchros zu asiatischen Film sind gut oder auch nur halbwegs akzeptabel. Deshalb gibt es bei diesen Film immer nur den O-Ton mit Subs.

Kotoko
Verstörende Wackelkamera, die hier wirklich berechtigt eingesetzt wird; einengende und bedrückende Perspektiven, erschreckende Bilder. Ein typischer Tsukamoto, der teilweise völlig übertrieben und dennoch oder gerade deswegen sehr beängstigend wirkt. Mich hat den ganzen Film über ein unangenehmes Gefühl gepackt, das mich bis zum Ende und danach nicht losgelassen hat. Bombe!
Nach dem etwas zugänglicheren Tetsuo: The Bullet Man ist Kotoko wieder ein etwas sperrigeres Werk von Tsukamoto.
Kotoko ist mit ihrem kleinen Kind maßlos überfordert. Zudem hat sie Wahrnehmungsstörungen: Sie sieht Menschen doppelt und kann nicht unterscheiden, welcher von beiden real ist. Das führt zu Gewaltausbrüchen, da sie sich und das Kind bedroht fühlt. So muss sie oft umziehen.
Sie vergräbt sich in ihrem eigenen Mikrokosmos, meidet die bedrohliche Welt dort draussen, doch selbst in den eigenen vier Wänden ist sie nicht sicher. Die Liebe und die Angst um ihr Kind machen alles nur noch schlimmer.
Schwieriger und verstörender Film, fordernd auch teils anstrengend. Mit GARANTIE nicht jedermanns Sache. Handwerklich jedoch vorzüglich mit begrenzten Mitteln umgesetzt. Tsukamotos Kamera ist immer Nahe bei Kotoko, teils zu nah. Ihre Verstörung überträgt sich auf das Bild, macht es immer unruhiger. Ihre Stimme aus dem Off schildert ihre Gedanken, schafft gepaart mit dem Bild eine fast schon unangenehme Intimität.
