"Basically, if you're on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying CG f--kathon, this ain't your movie," the script read. "In this flick, people get hurt or killed when shit falls on them. They will get just as hurt or just as killed if they get hit with something big and heavy, like, say, a car. Should anyone in our story have the misfortune to fall off a roof or out a window, they won't bounce. They will die."
'Jean-Claude Van Johnson' would see him playing a version of himself — a famous actor/martial arts pro who also happens to be a secret black ops private contractor.
Jean-Claude Van Damme is ready to give TV a swing.
The action star is set to topline an original scripted comedy for Amazon, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, with the streaming service picking up Jean-Claude Van Johnson to pilot.
Jean-Claude Van Johnson marks a reunion for Van Damme with The Expendables' Dave Callaham, who is attached to pen the script and exec produce alongside Scott Free Television's Ridley Scott and David Zucker. Peter Atencio will direct. The project has been in the works since late 2014. Production is being eyed to start in mid-May in Los Angeles. Amazon, Gersh, who reps Van Damme, and WME, who rep Scott Free, all declined comment.
Jean-Claude Van Johnson will star Van Damme as a version of himself — a famous actor and martial arts pro who comes out of retirement to resume his alter-ego: an undercover private contractor by the name of Jean-Claude Van Johnson. The comedy/action thriller will see Johnson's cover as the lead role in a reimagined action film version of Huckleberry Finn that lands him back in the midst of the danger he secretly always craves. It also brings him back in the orbit of Vanessa, his fellow operative and the love of his life that got away.
The comedy marks Van Damme's first small-screen role following a long roster of action features including The Expendables 2, Universal Soldier, Knock Off, Double Team, The Quest, Sudden Death, Hard Target and Last Action Hero, among others including voice roles in the Kung Fu Panda features. He's repped by Gersh and Hirsch Wallerstein.
Van Johnson also marks Callaham's first TV project after penning features Doom, Horsemen, Tell Tale as well as The Expendables franchise. He next has The Expendables 4 due in 2017. He's repped by UTA and Kaplan/Perrone.
For Scott Free TV, meanwhile, the company is wrapping the final season of CBS' critical darling The Good Wife and reteaming with creators Robert and Michelle King for the network's straight-to-series summer drama BrainDead. Van Johnson marks the company's second project with Amazon and joins The Man in the High Castle. The company is repped by WME.
Married ... With Children
Spinoff in the Works
nearly 20 years after married
… With Children ended its run, Bud
Bundy could be returning to TV.
The series that rocketed leads
Ed O’Neill, Katey Sagal, Christina
Applegate and David Faustino to stardom
could see some members of the
dysfunctional Bundy clan back on the
small screen with a TV spinoff in the
works at Sony Pictures Television, The
Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
As first reported by E!, the studio
that produced the Fox series is taking
out a pitch for a follow-up to Married
… With Children based on Faustino’s
Bud Bundy. It’s unclear which, if any,
other castmembers would be involved
in the potential spinoff. Fox re-aired
the pilot in 2012 as part of the series’
25th anniversary.
Married … With Children was one
of the first original series on Fox. The
multicamera comedy ran for 11 seasons
from 1987 to 1997 and was created by
Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt. It
was the longest-lasting live-action sitcom
to air on Fox. It’s also unclear who
is writing and producing the follow-up.
The Married … With Children
castmembers have all gone on to
success. O’Neill currently stars on
ABC’s Emmy darling Modern Family.
Applegate has a successful film career
and has starred on TV series Jesse,
Samantha Who? and Up All Night.
She continues to be one of the most
sought-after actresses every pilot
season. Sagal currently is wrapping up
the final season of FX’s biker drama
Sons of Anarchy and is a successful
singer. Faustino recently reunited with
his former TV dad on Modern Family.
The cast also recently reunited during
Sagal’s Walk of Fame ceremony.
The Married … With Children spinoff
comes as nostalgia continues to be
a hot trend on both broadcast and
cable. In addition to the sophomore
season of ABC’s 1980s-set comedy The
Goldbergs, Warner Bros. Television
also is shopping a Full House TV
revival with its original stars said to be
involved in some capacity, and Disney
Channel successfully revived fellow
TGIF comedy Boy Meets World with
follow-up sequel Girl Meets World,
which has already been renewed for a
second season.
Better Call Saul' Timeline to Overlap With 'Breaking Bad' for Meth-Cooking Cameos
That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on 'Breaking Bad,' " said executive producer Peter Gould of the prequel starring Bob Odenkirk.
So what kind of criminal clients and crazy cases might viewers expect on Better Call Saul? Bryan Cranston and his "baby blue," to start.
Executive producer Peter Gould, who created the character of Saul Goodman (played by Bob Odenkirk) and is co-showrunning Saul with Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, has confirmed that the AMC prequel series won't only take place before the meth-cooking duo did indeed call Saul. Instead, it will include scenes that move back and forth over several decades.
"One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before Breaking Bad, during Breaking Bad, and after Breaking Bad. That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on Breaking Bad," Gould told the New York Daily News.
However, the spinoff — currently filming in Albuquerque, N.M. — won't simply be a framework for nostalgic Walter White/Heisenberg cameos, which have yet to be officially confirmed. "We want to make a show that stands on its own, is its own story and is a brand extension," Gould continued. "We think we have a story that is worth making. ... We could never dream of the kind of success that Breaking Bad had and the love we got from the fans. But [with Saul,] at a certain point, you have to do the best job you can and tell the best story that entertains you, get a good response and hope people like it."
Better Call Saul was recently renewed for a second season, but its 10-episode first season's premiere has been pushed to 2015. "It’s tremendous for us because we get to plot out two seasons, and the way we work is similar to Breaking Bad as it is very serialized, and each episode builds on the last," he said of the renewal. "That gives us a much bigger canvas to play with."
Back in October, Gilligan teased the potential of Saul cameos in his THR cover story. "The sky's the limit with a prequel," he said at the time. "Everybody who's now deceased in the Breaking Bad world is obviously still alive. You never know who might turn up and when and where." He noted that Cranston and Aaron Paul (who played Jesse Pinkman) have expressed interest in making appearances, and Jonathan Banks, who played Saul's former private detective Mike Ehrmantraut, has boarded the prequel as a series regular. Gilligan reiterated his cameo plans while backstage at the Golden Globes: "Peter Gould and I will be hitting up all these wonderful actors for cameos at some point."
The show will also examine Saul's personal life, he explained. "We've only seen Saul in his professional habitat. It will be interesting to see a more personal, intimate side of Saul Goodman."
Sony and producer Neal Moritz are bringing the best-selling Sega video game Sonic the Hedgehog to the big screen.
The studio is teaming with Japan-based production company Marza Animation Planet, a division of the Sega Sammy Group, to make a hybrid computer-animated/live-action feature.
Upright Citizens Brigade alums Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are writing the screenplay, which will follow the antics of Sonic, the world's fastest hedgehog. The film will also feature some of the franchise's favorite characters, including the evil Dr. Eggman.
Sony-based Moritz (22 Jump Street) is producing through his Original Film banner alongside Marza’s Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi. Toby Ascher is executive producing.
For more than two decades, the billion-dollar Sonic franchise has been one of the world’s biggest gaming phenomena, with more than 140 million games sold.
"There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base," Columbia Pictures president of production Hannah Minghella said. "Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."
Added Marza CEO Masanao Maeda: "Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we're thrilled that he's now coming to the big screen. Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we're confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic while still capturing everything that the fans love about him."
Sony's hybrid animated/live-action Smurfs has spawned two films to date.
Moritz is the producer behind the Fast & Furious franchise. He has a Goosebumps adaptation coming up for Sony on Aug. 7, 2015, starring Jack Black.
Minghella and Andrea Giannetti will oversee the Sonic project for the studio.
Susser and Robichaux's feature film screenplay Chewie was ranked No. 3 on the 2011 Black List. They are currently writing How to Grow Up, a series in development for CBS, and Fist Fight, a feature film with New Girl star Max Greenfield and producers Shawn Levy, Billy Rosenberg and Dan Cohen attached. They are also writing a live-action version of The Jetsons.
