EXCLUSIVE: Scott McGehee & David Siegel have made a deal at Warner Bros to write and direct a new version of Lord Of The Flies, based on the iconic William Golding novel. They plan to be faithful to the novel with one major twist: the young students stranded on a remote island who descend into a savage social order will be girls.



It is an intriguing take on a novel that was most famously turned into a 1963 film by Peter Brook. It was later turned into a 1990 Castle Rock film by director Harry Hook, which is how Warner Bros wound up with some of the rights. McGehee & Siegel last directed the 2012 drama What Maisie Knew, and before that Bee Season and The Deep End. They are very good at depicting traumatic events and stories seen through youthful eyes. They told Deadline they are big fans of Brook’s original film, but thought a new contemporized version felt timely. It took awhile for Warner Bros and their ICM Partners reps to work out the rights issues with the author’s estate. That just happened, and they have just closed their deals and will begin writing immediately.

“We want to do a very faithful but contemporized adaptation of the book, but our idea was to do it with all girls rather than boys,” Siegel told Deadline. “It is a timeless story that is especially relevant today, with the interpersonal conflicts and bullying, and the idea of children forming a society and replicating the behavior they saw in grownups before they were marooned.”

McGehee said the subject matter “is aggressively suspenseful, and taking the opportunity to tell it in a way it hasn’t been told before, with girls rather than boys, is that it shifts things in a way that might help people see the story anew. It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression. People still talk about the movie and the book from the standpoint of pure storytelling,” he said. “It is a great adventure story, real entertainment, but it has a lot of meaning embedded in it as well. We’ve gotten to think about this awhile as the rights were worked out, and we’re super eager to put pen to paper.”

In den vergangenen Wochen hat Warner jede Menge DC-Filme angekündigt, welche in den nächsten Jahren auf die Leinwände kommen sollen. Neben den regulären Titeln aus dem DCEU soll es auch ein paar Standalone-Filme geben, welche nicht dem Extended Universe zugerechnet werden sollen. Einer dieser Filme soll die Origin-Story des Jokers behandelt und befindet sich laut diversen Meldungen in einer frühen Entwicklungsphase. Ein paar Eckdaten sind aber schon bekannt.

Die Handlung soll in den 80er-Jahren spielen und das Projekt wird als "gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City" beschrieben. Jared Leto wird nicht den Joker spielen und Martin Scorsese soll als Produzent fungieren. Todd Phillips und Scott Silver sollen das Drehbuch schreiben.

Einen möglichen Kinostart gibt es noch nicht, aber in den nächsten Wochen und Monaten wird es sicher noch die eine oder andere Wasserstandsmeldung geben. Wünschenswert wäre hier natürlich ein R-Rating um der Figur des Jokers etwas gerechter zu werden.

Tangerine Dream: Essentials

Gerade die älteren Nummers von TG sind eher ambient als melodisch, ziehen einen in ganz andere Sphären.

One of the coolest PR moves in recent memory was when Lionsgate screened The Woods for Comic-Con horror fans and it turned out to be Blair Witch. Now, Dark Sky Films and Hatchet director Adam Green have similarly pulled a fast one on lucky fans celebrating the film’s 10 year anniversary tonight at Hollywood’s ArcLight Cinema.

EW has confirmed that Green just screened the secretly filmed Hatchet reboot/sequel Victor Crowley and that it will begin a Nationwide road show this coming October. Developed and shot in secret for over two years, the slasher reboot made a surprising debut tonight at the “Hatchet 10th Anniversary Celebration.”

Set a decade after the events of the series’ first three films, Victor Crowley reunites Hatchet regulars Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th 7 – X’s Jason Voorhees) and Parry Shen (Better Luck Tomorrow).

In the film, we discover that Shen’s lone survivor Andrew Yong has spent over a decade claiming that local legend Victor Crowley was responsible for the deaths of the forty-nine people killed in the original trilogy of films. Yong’s allegations have been met with widespread disbelief, but when a twist of fate puts him back at the scene of the tragedy, Crowley is mistakenly resurrected and Yong must face the bloodthirsty ghost from his past.

“The only survivor that was ever found was Perry Shen’s character Andrew Yong,” Green told EW in an interview. “Now, ten years, later, he’s kind of become a little bit of a celebrity. At one point he’s compared to ‘the OJ Simpson of Honey Island Swamp’ because most people do not buy his story, but he got off because there was no evidence that he had done it. So, some people love him, a lot of people hate him, and now he’s written a book, which he is promoting on the tenth anniversary of the events of 2007. He is convinced to do one final interview back at the scene of the massacre, where he has never returned. Simultaneously to him going back there with this camera crew, that’s going to interview him, there is something else happening that brings back a little certain somebody.”

Victor Crowley’s cast also features Laura Ortiz (2006’s The Hills Have Eyes), Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie), and Brian Quinn (truTV’s “Impractical Jokers”).

The film is also screening at the upcoming FrightFest Festival in London. In October, Green will embark on a “Victor Crowley Road Show” during which he will introduce the film at special one-night screening events across the country. A full schedule of screenings and additional release information will follow.

Evan Cecil (“I (almost) Got Away with It”) directs from a screenplay by Roberto Marinas. Produced by Todd Myers, CEO of Dragonfly Films, and Elaine Marie Gibson, the film stars Sean Patrick Flanery (“The Boondock Saints”), Lindsey Morgan (“The 100”), Andrew Jacobs (“Paranormal Activity”) and Karen Grassle (“Little House on the Prairie”).

It's the future. But … it sucks.

At least, the real world does. In Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One, there is a happy escape: The OASIS, a virtual reality wonderland that is saturated in a love of all-things-‘80s.

The movie isn’t out until March 30, but as part of EW’s Comic-Con preview, we present a first look at actor Tye Sheridan as Parzival (real name: Wade Watts), using his VR visor and haptic gloves to disappear into a realm where movies, cartoons, comic books, and TV shows from the good old days make life in 2045 more bearable.

Spielberg’s own work helped define this era, but in his adaptation of Ernest Cline’s book he’s putting his own filmography aside (apart from the time-traveling Delorean from Back to the Future, which he executive produced.)

Cline says he wouldn’t be a writer “if I hadn’t grown up on a steady diet of Steven Spielberg movie.”

“His work directly influenced the narrative and the way that I told the story,” the author said. “So to have him directing, it’s too perfect to even be possible. And somehow it’s happened.”

This image is Wade’s “hideout,” an old van where the orphaned boy stores his most treasured belongings. In Ernest Cline’s 2011 book, this is where the character goes to be alone, since he shares his aunt’s teetering trailer in the impoverished, Jenga-like “Stacks” with 15 other people.

There’s extreme wealth in the world, but most people don’t have it. The only escape from this miserable existence is through the virtual reality simulation created by James Halliday (Oscar-winner Mark Rylance), who has recently shuffled off this mortal coil – but left behind a final game for his millions of users: Whoever solves his series of pop-culture quests wins the OASIS, along with its parent company, Gregarious Games.

This digital getaway will be locked away – or at least become prohibitively expensive – if it ends up being taken over by the corporate IOI organization.

So Wade and some of this fellow treasure-seekers are in a race with the rest of the world to protect it, uncovering clues in a game that will decide ownership of this innerspace.

Parzival’s closest friends and allies are people he’s never met in real life: Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), Aech (Lena Waithe), and I-R0k (T.J. Miller) – while their greatest foe in this quest is Nolan Sorrento (Rogue One’s Ben Mendelsohn), who is IOI’s murderous chief of Oology.

“Oology” is the study of eggs — a little in-joke about Easter eggs — and this image actually has a lot of them.
